A spry 83-year-old took me by surprise when he walked into the Rockwall School of Music. He casually lumbered up to the desk with a smile that ignited the room and said, ‘I’ve been lugging this violin around for 15 years. I’ve decided if I’m ever going to learn to play it, I better start now,”and so began a wonderful relationship with Mr. Robert Earl Williams. “He had the passion and we had the teachers; it was a match made in heaven,” said Russ Porter, director of RSM. Granted Mr. Williams had some challenges to overcome with arthritic joints in his hand and having to modify the violin shoulder position due to an old injury; but that didn’t keep him from pursuing his lifelong dream of playing ‘Amazing Grace’ at his church. Each week we were greeted with Mr. Williams infectious smile and passion to accomplish his instrument. After several months of lessons, with his family sitting in the congregation he made his church debut beautifully playing “Amazing Grace” on his violin. It wasn’t long after is first and only performance of worship that Mr. Williams suffered a mild stroke that ended his brief but successful musical journey. There is no age to music. It doesn’t expire, or somehow become out of reach. If anyone has the passion, the capacity to learn is available to them. Rockwall School of Music is proud to be a place where all ages, and all stages of life can come in pursuit of their musical dream.

Homeschool Orchestra Offered at Rockwall School of Music
What does a quarterback without a team, an entrepreneur without a business and an instrumentalist without an orchestra have in common? Each of these are skilled individuals who need something larger than themselves to feel complete. The Rockwall School of Music has dedicated the past 20 years to providing the highest quality lesson possible and is now expanding to offer homeschool students an opportunity to be part of a larger community of musicians.
‘Homeschool families frequently ask if we have some music options that allow for group interaction’, said Russ Porter, director of the Rockwall School of Music. ‘They spoke and we listened’ said Porter, who has spent several months securing an orchestra director and organizing the details to make this idea a reality.
This orchestra is for violin, viola, cello, or bass, players with one or more years of experience through private lessons and have completed the Suzuki Book 1. Advanced students will also have the opportunity to also perform in a chamber ensemble.
The orchestra will rehearse weekly on Tuesdays from 1:00 – 2:00 PM, beginning February 7th. The orchestra will be under the direction of Mr. Rob Flickinger, concert master of Park Cities Orchestra. He will arrange the orchestra parts to accommodate advanced and intermediate players. ‘It is recommended that students have at least one year of experience in order to participate in this orchestra’ said Flickinger. Students with less experience may participate with a recommendation from their private instructor. Music will be written/arranged to accommodate and challenge players of all levels.
There is a monthly tuition of $50.00 with family discounts available upon request. To secure your students place in this unique opportunity, please contact the office of the Rockwall School Music at 972-722-6874 or Office@RockwallMusic.com. Space is limited.
