Regardless of whether a child plays the piano for a short time or for a lifetime, they will acquire a baseline of skills and knowledge that will continue to benefit them throughout their life. In fact, learning to play the piano can be one of the most valuable of all musical studies because it is the most straight-forward and intuitive of instruments. Learning piano can also help tremendously when a student is studying a different musical instrument later.

We recommend that younger beginning students start with a 30 minute private lesson once a week. Older beginners can benefit from a 30 or 45 minute lesson. More advanced students typically find 60 minutes to be of greatest benefit.

Do I need a piano or keyboard at home to start lessons?

Yes, you’ll need something to practice on between lessons. A keyboard works fine to begin as long as it has full-size keys. Ideally it would have 88 keys that are weighted. If you’re unsure what to buy, we can point you in the right direction.

Are piano lessons only for kids?

Not at all. We teach children, teens, and adults. Many adult students start with no experience at all. Some return after years away. Both are common and neither is a problem.

How long does it take to learn piano?

That depends on how often you practice and what you want to play. Most students notice real progress within the first few weeks. The key isn’t speed. It’s consistency.

What kind of music will I learn?

That’s up to you. We teach reading, technique, and theory, but we also work on the music you actually enjoy. Classical, pop, worship, or something else. Lessons should sound like your taste, not someone else’s.

Who Tunes Pianos?

Investing in a quality instrument is an important element in a student’s success. This will make the learning process more enjoyable. If you already have an instrument, please make sure it is in good repair and in tune. If you need the name of a reputable piano tuner, please contact our office.

Rockwall School of Music is a fantastic organization! My daughter has been going on and off, as her schedule permits for several years. They are always very accommodating and the staff are always so kind!! They offer recitals so the students can showcase what they have learned and to help them get used to performing in front of people. My daughter has had many instructors, and she has enjoyed every single one of them!

I counted it one of life's richest blessings to have known Russ and Karen Porter for over 45 years as a church musician and music educator. Through the years of master degree classes and recitals, local church music ministry, and now a wonderfully successful and meaningful business adventure, I have witnessed them to be genuine and caring people serving others in so many kind, encouraging and admirable ways.
